A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such medications must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
