French authorities will start intercepting small boats in English Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the President asking him to support the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French maritime police representative states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to disable the propellers of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official departed from government.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
